Guided walks

Photograph of Chris Whitehouse with KniphofiaAre you interested in discovering more about the fynbos vegetation that makes the flora of this special part of the world unique?  We offer personalised guided walks, so that whether you are starting with no knowledge at all of plants or are already a keen botanist you will be able to learn more at your own level.

Your guide, Chris, is FGASA registered and a world expert on the plants of South Africa. While Cape roses (Cliffortia) and red-hot pokers (Kniphofia) are his specialities, his botanical expertise covers all flora of the area, and he also has extensive knowledge of natural history, including birds, butterflies and geology. He has spent many hours hiking the Cape mountains in search of plants and loves to share his knowledge and help others enjoy the wonders of the Cape Floral Kingdom.

Guided walks on Phillipskop Mountain Reserve can be anything from 1 hour to a full day (see below). Half or full day guided walks can also be arranged on other local nature reserves such as Fernkloof Nature Reserve, Walker Bay Nature Reserve or the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve. Chris is also available to guide on longer small group tours around South Africa. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

Guided Walks at Phillipskop

1-2 Hours – This walk gives a simple introduction to the Cape flora. The walk takes you as far as the Picnic Tree, a short and relatively flat walk for all abilities. You will learn about what makes fynbos and why it is so special. You will be introduced to many of the beautiful plants of Phillipskop and hear stories about their uses and interaction with animals. You will be free to explore the reserve on your own after the walk. Rate: R500 for up to 4 people, R100 per person above that.

Half day (3-4 hours) – This walk starts as for the 1 hour walk. It then continues to the waterfall before climbing up to the rocks stacks and returning over the lower slopes of Phillipskop. There is a moderate amount of rough paths and some climbing but nothing too strenuous. The walk will give a good introduction to fynbos and the plants of the reserve. There is also a better chance of seeing some of the special animals of the reserve (but no guarantees!) such as Verreaux’s (Black) Eagle, Ground Woodpecker and Klipspringer. Rate R1,000 for up to 4 people, R200 per person above that.

Full day (±6 hours) – This walk takes you to the upper slopes of Phillipskop. Depending upon fitness it can include the peak of Phillipskop itself and views to the north from the ridge. You will be able to take in one of the most amazing features of fynbos: how the species present change over short distances. The walk presents the best opportunity to see some of the more unusual plants of Phillipskop. Rate R1,800 for up to 4 people, R300 per person above that (lunch not included).
